The bronchi, which are the tiny tubes that transport air into and out of the lungs, become inflamed as a result of the chronic condition asthma. The bronchi of an asthmatic patient will be irritated, more sensitive than usual, and generate more mucus. Due to reversible airflow restriction, or bronchospasm, this can make breathing challenging and cause coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath.
