Over the past few decades, advances in antibiotics have helped to reduce the rate of death and disability caused by infectious diseases. But the overuse of antibiotics has resulted in the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, threatening the efficacy of these drugs. New antibiotic drugs are being developed, but it will take decades for them to reach the market.
