Arthritic Drugs

Arthritis is a disease in which the cartilage in the joints of the body wears down, leading to pain, swelling, and limited range of motion. There are over 100 types of arthritis. It is estimated that arthritis affects over 65 million people in the United States. Arthritis medications can be divided into two categories: non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and corticosteroids. NSAIDs are used for mild to moderate pain relief. They are available over-the-counter as well as by prescription. Some common NSAIDs are ibuprofen, naproxen, aspirin, and acetaminophen. Corticosteroids are used to treat acute attacks of arthritis. They are usually injected or taken orally. An arthritis medication that helps relieve joint pain, swelling, and stiffness is not available over-the-counter. There are many different types of arthritis, so it is important to consult your doctor before starting any new drug.
