Bethanechol chloride is a drug that is often prescribed to patients with congestive heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or chronic liver disease. It is an intravenous agent that has an analgesic effect on the body. It works by decreasing the amount of fluid in the lungs, which decreases the work the heart has to do. The decrease in work leads to an increase in blood flow to the brain, which in turn leads to an improvement in the patients mental state.
