Chola art and architecture

Chola art and architecture has its origins in the Tamil region of India. It is the result of an evolution of the Pallava art style, which was introduced to the region in the 6th century. This art style, however, underwent a transformation during the Chola period. During the reign of Rajaraja Chola I (985-1014), an emphasis was placed on creating an extravagant and grandiose appearance. The Chola style of architecture was also characterized by a more exuberant and intricate decoration than the Pallava style.
