Invented by Andrew McCandless, the artificial leaf is a small device that can be used to generate electricity from water and sunlight. The device has a sponge on one side and a photo-voltaic cell on the other. The water is sucked in from one side and leaves the sponge wet, while the photo-voltaic cell absorbs the light. This causes electrons to flow from the sponge to the photo-voltaic cell. These electrons are then used to generate an electric current.
