The capsules are usually clear, and sometimes opaque, and can be made of either gelatin or gelatin substitute. Capsules can be used to encapsulate or package substances for storage, transport, or consumption. They are typically made from gelatin, a mixture of water, and gelatin (or gelatin substitute) and then dried into a hard shape. The capsule is then sealed by either a metal (usually aluminum), or a plastic (usually polyethylene) lid.
