Incense is used to refresh the aroma of indoor spaces, for spiritual purposes, for health, and for other objectives. Incense smoke, like anything else that releases smoke, will be breathed when used. Recently, there has been some research into how incense harms ones health.Purification and sanctification are the goals of incensing and the symbolic importance of smoke. In the Eastern Rites, for example, at the start of Mass, the altar and sanctuary area were incensed as Psalm 50, the "Miserere," was chanted invoking Gods mercy.
