Mannitol is a common and widely used diuretic drug. It is given to treat fluid and electrolyte imbalance, swelling of the brain and eye, and a number of other medical conditions. Mannitol works by stimulating the release of water from the body into the urine, which can cause dehydration and a loss of potassium, which can lead to abnormal heart rhythms.
