Polio Vaccine

Polio is a crippling and sometimes deadly disease that can be prevented by inoculating children with the Salk polio vaccine. Salk developed the vaccine in 1955. Polio vaccine is a preventative medicine that prevents poliomyelitis, a crippling and sometimes deadly disease that can be caused by a virus. The virus is spread by contact with an infected persons saliva or feces. The vaccine is given orally and in three doses over a span of time, typically three to four months. The polio vaccine is made up of live attenuated viruses. The virus is weakened so that it cannot cause disease in the vaccinated person, but the virus can still spread to other people. The vaccine is administered in three doses over a span of time, typically three to four months.
