Sai Baba of Shirdi is considered by many to be one of the most influential spiritual leaders of India. He was born in the village of Shirdi, in the Indian state of Maharashtra in 1838. Shirdi is a small town and Sai Baba’s parents had a small cotton-spinning business. When he was only nine years old, his father passed away and he had to take over the business. He also became the head of the local Hindu temple, known as the Sai Mandir. In the years to come, he would become well known for his charisma and powers. At the age of 26, he was known for having taken a vow of silence, and this would last until his death in 1918.
