There have been various investigations into the harmful effects of incense recently.The act of incensing is done for the aim of purification and sanctification, and the smoke has symbolic meaning. For instance, in the Eastern Rites, the altar and sanctuary area were incensed at the start of Mass as Psalm 50, the "Miserere," was chanted invoking Gods mercy.
