Tetanus Vaccine

Tetanus is a disease caused by the tetanus toxin, a neurotoxin produced by bacteria in the genus Clostridium. The toxin enters the body through a break in the skin or through an open wound and causes a painful, generalized, and stiffening muscle spasm that can lead to respiratory failure. In the United States, tetanus occurs most often in individuals who have not been immunized. In developing countries, tetanus is often seen as a complication of wounds from penetrating injuries such as gunshots, knives, and farm equipment.
