Sodium Bicarbonate Injection

Sodium bicarbonate injection is a sterile, isotonic, non-pyrogenic solution that is used to treat metabolic acidosis. Sodium bicarbonate is the sodium salt of bicarbonate, which is the chemical that buffers the body against the acidity of carbon dioxide. In patients with respiratory failure, sodium bicarbonate may be used to increase the pH of the blood and thus improve oxygen delivery to the body. It can also be used to buffer against excessive production of hydrogen ions in patients with hyperkalemia.
