Sodium Bicarbonate Injection is a liquid solution of sodium bicarbonate that is used to correct metabolic acidosis. Metabolic acidosis is the condition of having too much acid in the blood. The blood has too much acid when the body is not able to buffer it with bicarbonate, which can happen when there is a lack of fluids, alcohol use, or a respiratory failure. Sodium bicarbonate is given by injection to people who have a condition that causes metabolic acidosis, or it is given by mouth to people who have an osmotic diuresis. The injection of sodium bicarbonate has a significant effect on the bodys pH and decreases the amount of acids in the blood.
