Sodium Bicarbonate Injection

Sodium bicarbonate is a chemical compound which has the chemical formula NaHCO3. Sodium bicarbonate is an alkali, and a salt of bicarbonate. It is a white crystalline powder, that is soluble in water. Sodium bicarbonate is commonly used in foods as a leavening agent and also in a number of chemical reactions. Sodium bicarbonate is used as a treatment for hypernatremia, a condition in which there is an abnormally high level of sodium in the blood, which can lead to neurological damage. It can also be used as an antacid, although the efficacy of this use is disputed. Sodium bicarbonate is given by injection, usually as sodium bicarbonate 0.9% solution in normal saline or 5% dextrose in water. It is also available as a powder, to be mixed with a beverage of choice.
